Counting without a stopwatch
"one-Mississippi, two-Mississippi, three-Mississippi..."
Saying the full word "Mississippi" takes about one second, so each "number-Mississippi" is roughly one second. Not perfectly accurate — but far better than just counting numbers, which people tend to rush.
